Trophée des Alpes
The Senate and people of Rome dedicated the Alpine Trophy to Emperor Augustus between the years 7 and 6 B.C. to commemorate the conquest of the Alpine arc, which commenced in 25 B.C. when he was in power. The monument exploits the association between Hercules (or Heracles) and the site of Monaco and the route known as the “Hercules Road” for political purposes. The inscription, which has been restored on numerous occasions, lists, from east to west, the names of the peoples vanquished by Augustus.
