Milestones at the church of San Michele
Abandoning the hillside, where the 13th century Canarda Gate would later stand, Via Iulia Augusta turned toward Albintimilium and, west of the River Roia, crossed the hill which the mediaeval town would eventually occupy. Evidence of this route is found in the three milestones kept in the Romanesque church of San Michele [St. Michael]. One (to the right of the entrance) refers to the construction of the road under the Emperor Augustus between the 13-12 B.C., the others to its restoration by the Emperor Caracalla around 213 A.D. (to the left of the entrance and in the crypt).
